Each pendant is handcrafted. I begin by
cutting the glass I wish to use for
the pendant - taking note of pleasing colors,
textures and design. These pieces of glass
blend together as they are fired in the
kiln to 1470 degrees. It takes about
one hour to reach that temperature, then
another hour to slowly let the pendant
cool to a safe temperature before it can
be removed from the kiln to be cleaned, signed, and made
ready for you to wear. These pendants can be worn with
casual dress or with the fanciest of attire. I include a sterling
silver chain with each pendant you order.
Each month I update my site with newly designed pendants.

These pendants and/or earrings begin as a
lump of Precious Metal Clay that is pure silver
(sterling silver is .925). I create each piece
by hand, using original designs of my own,
or in some cases, I use a mold to form the
piece. It is then fired in the kiln, and
removed to be polished to a beautiful shine. I
weigh each piece and price them according
to how much silver is used. The price does not
include a chain. I update my site often with newly designed pieces.

Click here to view a little something extra. This section has
handcrafted dichroic glass pendants that
have fine silver fused into the glass, or have
an etched design. The combination of pure
silver and sparkling dichroic glass is breathtaking,
and the design etched into the glass gives the
piece a little something extra. Each pendant includes a
sterling silver chain so that you can wear
your piece as soon as you receive it. Each month
I update my site with newly designed pendants.

What is dichroic glass?

Dichroic glass comes from the manufacturer with a coating of metal oxides bonded to the glass. It is brilliant, opalescent, richly colorful, and sometimes reflects more than one color, much like the fire of an opal or a peacock feather. The artist cuts the glass, sometimes layering it to blend colors and patterns and add depth to the piece. It is then fired slowly in a kiln until it reaches 1470 degrees, and gradually cooled down to room temperature to strengthen and protect the glass. Some pieces will have a hidden horizontal opening for a chain or a cord, and others may have a bail of sterling silver. Each piece is unique and special. It immediately catches the eye of the beholder, as no one else will have one just like it. When it is fused with other glass into a pendant, the result is a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry with intense colors that can be enjoyed and treasured for a life time. No photograph, however, can truly show the brilliance and color that you experience when viewing the piece in person.

Who is the artist?

My name is Melissa Balusek. When I first began to notice dichroic glass jewelry, I was excited about the lustrous colors and patterns. I could hardly wait to experiment with the glass - and I still feel that way. The problem is, I see the beauty of the glass and I find it hard to resist adding it to my stash. (My husband says we may have to move out of our house just to make room for all the glass, beads, and equipment I have accumulated!) I walk into my workroom and see many beautiful patterns and colors of glass so that making creations like the ones offered here is an exciting adventure. I am also a PMC Guild and PMC Connection Certified Level 2 instructor. I teach hands-on classes on how to create jewelry with Precious Metal Clay, how to fuse glass, and other advanced instruction. I do this in my home where I can give more individualized attention to my students because I like helping others find joy in creating wearable art. I have presented my artistic creations at various craft shows in Texas, since 1999. I work with dichroic glass, glass beads, and precious metal clay to create beautiful jewelry you will want to add to your accessories. Now that I have retired from teaching school, I have more time to "play" with my glass. Email Melissa at melissa(at)Bdazzlers.com by clicking here.
